Rhiannon is a 35' Wharram Tangaroa with cutter rig designed by Thomas
Firth Jones, who was a friend of the builder, substantially contributed
to at least one Wharram design (Tanenui), and also designed and sailed
his own multihulls. Wharram plans and rig plan are included with boat.
She has 4 berths with stowage below the bunks and 4 holds, one on each
of the hull ends, so sails, rigging, anchors, awnings, buckets, etc.
live in their own space. Each hatch has two methods of securement;
bungies with hooks for cruising, and they can be tightly battened from
the inside if needed by reaching through the deckplates at the end of
each berth.
The port cabin is set up as a chartroom with radar CRT and counter area
plus removable cross-hull table. The starboard cabin has galley with
two-burner propane cooktop. Removable deckplate visible in one photo
allows gas to be turned on and off from galley, and cooktop is mounted
on a second sink with through-hull drain for safety. Both cabins have
lots of handy stowage, including under the floorboards for keeping
things cool (see photo). There is an inset compass beside each cabin
entryway, and the Autohelm control is located below the compass on the
starboard side.
She has wheel steering with differential rudder movement for tighter
turns. She will turn in a very short radius considering her width.
-Operational JRC radar and Raymarine autohelm with wired remote.
-Two new batteries, one is AGM. They are not linked, have been using
one for each hull. Battery selector switch and cables and small solar
maintenance charger with clips also included. Halogen lighting in the
starboard berths and both cabins. Low-drain hoistable anchor light with
photocell, and new decklight/steaming light on mast.
-Two anchors; a folding aluminum seaplane anchor (Northill) for
overnights or stable conditions, a large danforth for leaving her on
her own, both with rodes.
-Just upgraded to newer low-hours Yamaha 9.9, extra long shaft, with
several choices for controls and layout available.
-New Lee Sails mainsail with cover, other sails in good condition,
include drifter, yankee, stays'l, spinnaker.
-Two cross-hull awnings with collapsible struts and a movable umbrella
with two fixed bases to ease anchoring in the sun. When taken down they
easily fit in a corner of one hold.
-Inflatable dinghy that is serviceable but not very lovely (old,
patched, but unlikely to be stolen), rechargable Coleman inflator that
works very quickly, and new adjustable aluminum oars.
-Many other small items included, horn, chart rule, spotlight,
whistles, extra lines and fenders, bunk cushion, extra steering cable,
etc.
-New coat of good bottom paint applied within last two months.
-The retractable motor box was constructed from the Tiki 38 plans.
-Also available is a very nice hard dinghy drawn by Thomas Firth Jones
for builder.
What she needs that I know about: minor leaks attended-to, new windows,
hatch slides are worn (stainless tracks already on the hatches, but the
cabintop slides are teak), deck boxes and ramp could use paint. The
yankee halyard needs to be installed, a new 85' length of high quality
1/2" line is included for that, and it's braided to 75' of cable if you
want to upgrade to an aluminum mast. The masthead VHF antenna is
broken. An exact new Shakespeare replacement with cable and connectors
is included. There is a working VHF antenna mounted on the port cabin.
What's on my to-do list: Install an aluminum mast and roller furling,
eliminating the stays'l. Improved steering cable routing and a small
pedestal with nicer wheel. Continuous side windows on the cabins. Wider
ramp with solid rungs.
She is currently being stored at a reputable boatyard with superb
boat-fettling skills. They do repair work for insurance companies. If
you would like to have a Tangaroa done your way this is an opportunity
to do so, or you can meander down the ICW as she is and do it later.
